Chapter 6 – Serial-to-Network Connectivity Using Serial Dial-in
Command Line Interface and Application Examples for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. IP Modules (S000368F) 82
Scenario 5 – Auto-Dialin Enhancement for
Use with GPS Tracking Software
This scenario describes the TCP session establishment, auto-dialin-chat-script negotiation, and data transfer
between the GPS receiver and the GPS tracker server.
Connection establishment and data transfer between the server and the host
In the figure above, the TCP/IP server is the GPS server and the host is the GPS receiver. The configurations for
PPP link establishment and the configurations for auto-dialin are setup on the IP Module
The configuration is saved and the IP Module is rebooted. After boot up, auto-dialin invokes the telnet client in the IP
module to establish a TCP connection with the server. Auto dialin negotiates a chat-script with the server. The chat-
script expects the “expect-string” and sends the “send-string”. The chat scripts are maintained in a chat file.
Chat File:
#Line
Expect-String Send-String
1 “SEND PASSWORD” SECRET
2 OK “”
IP module starts receiving and sending data in full duplex mode. Data received from the serial side (s0) is parsed for
the configured delimiter. If the delimiter is FOUND, the prefix string is added before the delimiter and then data is sent
to the server. The data received from the server side is sent to the serial without any modifications.
